When was Father’s Day celebrated at first?

The first Father’s Day was held in Spokane, Washington on June 19th, 1910. The day was initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her single father, a civil war veteran raising six children alone. She was inspired by the recently created Mother’s Day and campaigned for a similar recognition of fathers. Although it took many years for its universal adoption as a holiday, President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day official in the US in 1972. Since then it has been celebrated worldwide as an opportunity to express love for dads everywhere.
